JAY-Z and J. Cole Back Lil Durk’s Push for Release Ahead of November Bail Hearing

JAY-Z and J. Cole are lending their voices to Lil Durk’s latest effort to secure release from federal custody. Both artists submitted letters asking a judge to consider allowing the Chicago rapper to return home while his remaining criminal case moves forward.

The letters accompany a new bond proposal ahead of a hearing scheduled for November 4, 2026. Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, remains detained following his September acquittal in a federal murder-for-hire trial. He still faces separate racketeering-related and firearms charges, with another trial scheduled for August 2027.

In his letter, JAY-Z emphasized Durk’s character and the opportunities he has helped create for other artists. He described a musician who took his career seriously and used his success to help young people from his community enter the music business.

JAY-Z also asked the court to weigh Durk’s recent acquittal when considering his request for release. While acknowledging the seriousness of the remaining allegations, he argued that returning home would allow Durk to support his family and continue contributing to his community.

J. Cole’s letter offered a personal look at their Grammy-winning collaboration, “All My Life.” Cole recalled initially wanting to work on a different kind of record, but said Durk was determined to deliver something positive for younger listeners.

According to Cole’s account, Durk wanted the song to communicate peace, maturity and the possibility of change. Cole also described visiting a juvenile detention facility in Cleveland, where young people spoke about their connection to Durk and his music. He presented those experiences as examples of the rapper’s potential to influence others positively.

The proposed release package includes substantial financial guarantees. Durk’s attorneys have offered future music royalties and other earnings as collateral, alongside cash and property pledged by supporters. Sony Music Entertainment has also offered to guarantee an appearance bond of up to $1 million.

Other letters submitted to the court include support from businessman Michael Rubin. Andrea Robinson, the mother of Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, whose death is central to the proceedings, wrote that her family would not object to bond if the judge considered it appropriate.

The decision now rests with U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald. The November 4 hearing will address whether the proposed conditions are sufficient for Durk’s release while he awaits the next trial. As of October 28, no decision granting the new bond request has been announced.
